‘Where God Grew Tired’ by Wildcard Campfire: This Album Defines Modern Metal, and It Defines Storytelling
Wildcard Campfire is a faceless metal project that captures various emotions through its hardcore music style. The songs are characterised by a variety of growling techniques, rhythmic djent sounds, and guitar riffs dancing through the octaves, creating an immersive experience altogether. Rom Burla is the creative director and writer of the project. He is a master songwriter, composer, arranger, and a brilliant vocalist with a noteworthy vocal range. ‘Where God Grew Tired’ is his debut album, but even before its arrival, his singles gained much attention from critics. Songs like ‘A Hymn For The Unburied’, ‘Make It Pop’, and ‘The Lowest Point’ were loved by metal enthusiasts and music magazines alike. The artist carries a story in each song, to the point that it feels like you are watching a movie. The cinematic sounds and grand instrumental compositions will transport you to another world. Intense melodies intertwine with fast-paced drums to develop a profound scheme of imagery and vibrations.

“Wildcard Campfire’s ‘Where God Grew Tired’ stands as a masterpiece where every detail in its arrangement and narrative showcases depth.”
This deathcore metal album will command your attention from the very first song. I would love to start by talking about my favourite songs from the album: ‘The Ashen Gospel - I. Before the Banners Burn’, ‘II. When the Banners Burn’, and ‘II. Where God Grew Tired’. These songs tell a very interesting and deep story of a false prophet. It is a story of a leader who could not keep his word to his followers. The songs show how power gets corrupted and how the followers lose their sense of reasoning under the command of a reckless leader. Eventually, the kingdom comes down; there is retaliation, and a war begins, as the second song says, ‘When the Banners Burn’. The ultimate result of such a trajectory of society is war, destruction, and the absence of God’s light. However, this is my interpretation of the songs, not necessarily the intended one. Comment below with the perspectives and details that I might have missed; I would love to know how you perceive these songs.
Sonically, the album is vast. Along with three heart-throbbing songs from ‘The Ashen Gospel’, the album also contains a reflective song called ‘The Ghosts of My Past’. The smooth vocals and immaculate vocal mixing stuck with me. Capturing the emotions of grief, sorrow, and regret, the song is honest to its core. ‘Where God Grew Tired’ is an absolute must-listen. The narrative flows effortlessly from start to finish, with each song strung together like beads on a single, continuous necklace. Hit the link below and dive into the world of narrative metal!
