Hailing from the Isle of Mull, Scotland, Finlay Birch is a newfound indie angel whose sound melts like butter in your ears. The Scottish singer-songwriter, who originally hails from Inverclyde, tells us how this transition makes him feel one, not just with the place but also with himself. A genre-defying sound that draws inspiration from the tales of ordinary life, Birch's sound blends elements of indie, soft rock, acoustic flares, and alternative folk to give you a sound you cannot get enough of. His sonic style is shaped largely by reflective writing and a strong sense of place. This recent project is a collaborative fusion with his long-time friend, the visionary Dylan Cooper, and contains pieces that are over a decade's worth of consistency, creativity, and hard work. Exploring vibrant themes of emotional weight, stillness, and serenity, let's witness what this new album is about.

“A pure, blissful moment of authentic acoustic storytelling, this entire album sounds like a romantic bliss made with a lot of nuance and emotional depth.”
With every song bringing in a flavour of emotional calm, we start this dreamy journey with “Fly Us Both Away,” which feels like the sound of sitting under a starry sky. Embracing human connection like it's the last pill one needs to survive, this is a soft apology that hits you hard and slow. Taking a trip down memory lane, “HBDN1” is a nostalgic pillow where the artist reflects upon the tales of his life and remembers how sad it is to still keep track of those who break your heart. The acoustic flare becomes even more vibrant with “Weight Will Unwind.” What sounds like sonic nirvana, this embraces the warmth of oceans and advises you to go with the wind and think about everything you do. Adding an element of whimsy, this is about the fact that nothing is that problematic or big, and how a shift of perspective is all you need. What sounds like an extension of the same feeling of quiet solace, “Inside Your Mind” is a creative masterpiece, where one only wishes you could get inside the minds of your loved ones to view the bond from their perspective, because sometimes words or actions don't convey signals as loudly. Brewing the yearning and longing to be your loved one even longer, “I Want You” is an adorable track that is about embracing the highs and lows of life, being beside the one you love and adore.
As we step into the second portion of this sonic journey, the mood shifts to pure wanderlust. “The River” embodies a weird wave of adrenaline, where 'river ' symbolises the fluidity in life, and how people experience change at the same time, but by essentially being the same person all their lives. “Two Magpies,” the following track, is finally finding the time and space to see where you've eventually come, only to find out you want the ship to stay afloat, the person to stay. Soft, captivating, and full of tiny moments of appreciation about the other person, this is the kind of love you hope finds you. “Hebridean Eyes” is a mellow lullaby, the kind you listen to by the fireplace while camping, where every word heals something in you, the kind of healing you didn't know you needed. “Skim Stones” feels like the sound of the moment when you stare into the clear waters of a swimming pool late at night. Overall, I must say every song here induces depth, nuance, and dreaminess of its own, and one truly cannot get enough of it in one listen.
