After the successful run of his love song, “Sugar Water,” the Melbourne-based artist has released a completely different version of the track on all major streaming platforms. Okayden’s alternative pop “Sugar Water” takes a new avatar in the form of a DnB club song. The remix was created in collaboration with Polybit. Together, they have recreated the original track into a pulsating club-ready remix.

“Sugar Water” is a high-energy twist to a hypnotic queer romance track by Okayden.
The remix of the song has two distinctive touches—one from the master Okayden and VRDA, and another from the versatile producer, Polybit. The duo has turned a hypnotic song into a DnB groove that makes you move your feet. The theme of queer love portrayed in the original version is given an upbeat and rhythmic touch to reach a different set of audiences, and it does its job pretty well. Although this is the remix version of “Sugar Water,” it doesn’t fail to impress listeners with its unique charm.
We also got a chance to interview Okayden. Let's see what he has to say:
Can you tell us more about the track and who’ll contribute to it?
The original track featured myself and VRDA, with Polybit contributing his drum n bass style to the remix. The song is about first time queer love and the confusing yet exciting feelings that occur.
What was the inspiration behind the song?
The inspiration was from VRDA, and about their experiences with LGBTQI+ feelings for the first time.
How was the recording process of the track?
Originally it started out as an instrumental I made and came across VRDA’s work online and decided to reach out and pitch this piece. VRDA and I are both producers so we were on calls and messaging constantly, bouncing back ideas to each other about how to build it further. Lyrically it was all VRDA, she heard that first initial idea I made and this song came from it almost organically.
Why did you decide to make a remix version of the original release and what was different you wanted to do with it?
I’d started talking to collaborators to work on a remix album of my self-titled 3rd EP. Polybit was listening through my tracks and came across Sugar Water, not originally on the album but I was open to the idea of him reworking it.
How was your experience working with Polybit and VRDA? And what is one trait you absolutely love about their craft?
They are both so creatively exciting musicians to work with in their own ways. VRDA creates these lush worlds in her music and Polybit just can’t stop making bangers. They are both so open to feedback too, much like myself. I feel like if you can’t open yourself up to others opinions in a collaborative manner then it’s not really a collaboration, you know?
What was the most fun moment while working on this track?
Remixes are always fun to me because I hear the final product like a fan and get so excited about it. Polybit incorporates not only the vocals but also parts of the instrumentation make me reflect on the original in a new light.
How have you evolved as an artist with every song you make?
I never like to restrict myself to just one ‘sound’, but the more I produce the more I hear an ‘Okayden-ness’ to my music, which I’m trying to embrace more.
If you were to describe your song in one line, how would you do it?
High-energy bop to tell your gay crush you’re into them.
What is one of the most memorable moments of your musical journey?
Performing an hour mix for Electronic Music Australia, just highlighting some of the cool artists I’ve found along the way.
What can we expect next from Okayden?
Currently working on the next album, but also got some remixes lined up too.
