50mething is an experimental pop artist hailing from Ealing, England. His sound is largely rooted in alternative pop and R&B, while simultaneously being drawn from his experiences in life. 50mething refuses to stick to monotony; there is a constant drive for experimentation in his music, ranging from different instruments to different sounds. When you really sit with his sound, you realise there are major influences of ’80s production in it, and what truly sets him apart is his capacity to do all this from a home setup.

Obsession

“50mething takes you on an experimental pop journey for his love for music.”

‘Obsession’ is one of those songs that is born from a shift in life, from discovering something that’s truly yours. For 50mething, in this current chapter of his life, that something is music. The song embodies the realisation that there is a power to music that is all-consuming. 50mething makes you realise that artistry does not die with age, and ‘Obsession’ is a great example of how one can draw from different chapters in their life to create art unabashedly. There is a nostalgia to the sound of ‘Obsession’. From the first play onwards, there are a multitude of textures to the song. Drawing from the sounds of avant-garde artists such as Prince and Phil Collins, 50mething’s production tells a story. Then there’s the shift in the middle of the song, where the sound moves from reverb-heavy drums to a more acoustic, raw sound that is more playful in nature. If you are someone who is drawn to music that embodies life and storytelling, then ‘Obsession’ is the song for you.
