Grunge gained popularity in the 1990s, when Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden dominated the radio. Grunge's success opened the door for other alternative rock acts like Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead, who contributed to defining the decade's sound.

A few of the numerous sub-genres that have developed recently include indie rock, emo, and post-punk revival. Numerous bands and musicians today continue to be inspired by the rich history and wide variety of sounds of rock music, making it one of the most well-liked and influential musical genres.
